Led by a disgusting example

January 27, 2005

Today, Government newspaper Diario Vea published a cartoon, which continues on the same line of sexual innuendo started by President Chavez in reference to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice… The cartoon is so disgusting, debasing, gross and offensive, that I could not even conceive of posting it. But more importantly, I find the fact that anyone could author this and get it past the Editors of that newspaper absolutely disgusting. I must say that I knew there was a darker side to my country, but it really bothers me that something so offensive could be published by any media, official, commercial or whatever.

Before someone comes and says that Vea is an independent newspaper, It’s Director and founder is Guillermo Garcia Ponce, Political Commander of the Revolution in Chavez’ MVR party. His brother is both a reporter and a member of the Board, for which he is quite qualified, as he was a reporter for Tass, during the heyday of Soviet Communism. (His brother Guillermo was President of the Communist party ever since most Venezuelan left split from it because of the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968).

But even if Diario Vea were independent, this simply reflects the type of leadership this country has today. You lead by example, and the disgusting example was set by Hugo Chavez last Sunday, the rest, as they say, is simply history.

Two from the news

January 27, 2005

–Burping retired General Acosta Carles, Governor of Carabobo by the grace of fraud, demonstrated today that in this revolution some of the “people” are better than others. It all began when wholesale invasions of land and buildings began to take place all over the state of Carabobo, as the Governor decided not to stop them. As the number of invasions grew the Governors simply said: “I will not throw the police at the “people”.

Of course there are apparently, more than one type of “people” in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. This morning, some of the “people” decided to protest the invasions of lands adjacent to where they live, where the municipality had scheduled to build a medical clinic and some courts for the kids to play in. Lo and behold, the police decided to repress these people, and began dispersing the crowd with tear gas and plastic bullets.

While some modern buildings were also invaded in middle class areas, the focus of the protests was in low class barrios in the outskirts of Valencia. I guess some “people” are more “worthy” than others in this “process”.

There used to be something called, the right to property and free speech…Oh! Sorry, wrong country.

–And then there is the exciting news that Prosecutor Isaias Rodriguez, who can not even investigate his own staff and has all investigations involving Government figures always incomplete, has decided to investigate the Colombian Minister of Defense. Rodriguez even showed some ignorance when he said that he would ask for his extradition, if he found evidence that Granda was taken from Venezuela by Colombian military. I see, extraditing a Colombian national and a Minster of Defense, way to go!

Rodriguez had quite a day today when he also said that public opinion had already condemned assassinated prosecutor Danilo Anderson. Asked by reporters if the details revealed in the press about the testimony of the witnesses in the case was authentic, Rodriguez said it was. Well, such testimony has more than one witness saying that the Prosecutor had about half a million dollars in cash (in both local and foreign currency) at home, was asking those charged of rebellion for money, had various cars, jet skis and an extensive wardrobe and ate daily at the best restaurants in Caracas. Obviously Mr. Anderson managed his budget very well on his meager prosecutor salary (about US$ 18,000 a year).

Most of these witnesses happen to be good friends of the dead prosecutor, who was awarded posthumously the highest award given by the Venezuelan Government when he was assassinated and whose funeral was held at the Capitol building to honor him.

And did I hear correctly when Rodriguez said the country needed a police force to investigate the police? Did anyone hear that too?

Oh, by the way, at the beginning of December Rodriguez also said the case would be solved in ten days. Then, the Minister of Justice said it would be solved before the end of the year. Then, the Governor of Miranda, who legally has nothing to do with the case, said that it would be solved before the end of the year. I guess, they were right, they never said which year.
