This kind of corruption would be inspirational in scope to somebody like James Ibori or even Nursultan Nazarbayev.

But behind Fernandez Barrueco’s banking empire, what do we have? How is it that so many hands got dirty enough that no institution of state ever became an obstacle?

My assumption, unproven like most of my theories, is that Chavez stays in power through the world’s most kick-ass retirement program for all senior staff, generated mostly by CADIVI, and then laundered through somebody like Fer-Bar’s banking shell system and deposited abroad.

When the Chavez experiment runs out of gas, I think we are going to see that the real revolution was the transfer of state wealth into private hands and taken out of the country. The world would be such a better place if the most corrupt people would have the decency to spend and invest their stolen money back into the country took it from.
