Comments on: IACHR report on Venezuela: And you really thought Venezuela was a democracy?

Observations focused on the problems of an underdeveloped country, Venezuela, with some serendipity about the world (orchids, techs, science, investments, politics) at large. A famous Venezuelan, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo, referred to oil as the devil's excrement. For countries, easy wealth appears indeed to be the sure path to failure. Venezuela might be a clear example of that.

Of course the OAS will not take action, even though it is evident to the Commission that human rights have been violated. It will not apply the Carta Democratica to Venezuela because, like any of the other international organizations (UN, etc.) they will only take action when there is a civil war that threatens other countries. As a former staff member of the UN, I affirm that those organizations are only good at having meetings and blah, blah, blah. And they will only sanction countries when that country has become a thorn on the sides of neighbors and threatens everyone else, i.e. Iran with its nuclear power, etc. If truth be told, many of the members of those organizations (and the organizations themselves) are big violators of human rights--political, social, labor, equal education, etc.

I do not think Venezuela is a Republic anymore. Even an oligarchic one. Even a "popular" one.

To me it appears that the adjectives that the Socialists and Nacional Socialists put before Republic, are there to void the word Republic of any meaning.

There's simply no rule of law, no checks on government power, no legal possibility of challenging the chief of state and no way that citizens can review the State effectively, beginning with its budget.

As for the necessary independence and freedom of individual citizens (which require strong property rights by the way), what's left is owed only to the enormous inefficiency and arbitrariness of what passes for State here.

To me he is Hugo the First, H.R.M., S.E. (His Red Majesty, Socialist Emperor), and if they still call him President... Well, they call Fidel Castro and Robert Mugabe, and Kim Jong Il Presidents too.
